Hydration Is More Than Water

Hydration starts with water, but fluid movement in the body also depends on dissolved solutes and transport systems. In the intestine, sodium and glucose can move together through Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 1 (SGLT1), a well-established mechanism that supports water absorption.
More than simply drinking
That mechanism is one part of a larger fluid-balance system. Sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate each have distinct physiological roles, while glucose can participate directly in intestinal sodium transport. The usefulness of an electrolyte drink therefore depends on both formulation and circumstance, not just the presence of minerals.
