June 20, 2026: True grit for GALE and PROCTOR as they emerge 1–2 for Commonwealth Games selection in the Women’s 400m at the National Championships
June 19, 2026 — Ottawa, ON
Amid adverse weather conditions, Day 3 of the Canadian Track and Field National Championships featured the final of one of the marquee events: the Women’s 400m. The race did not disappoint.
The event was promised to be a showdown between experienced Olympians and up-and-coming speed-endurance talent, with priority selection for the Commonwealth Games on the line. Among the frontrunners were 26-year-old Lauren GALE, a favourite with one of the fastest personal bests in the field, but still seeking her first senior Canadian 400m title; and 21-year-old Dianna PROCTOR, bronze medallist in last year’s final and ranked #1 in Canada this season.
As the program for the U20 and Senior 400m finals got underway, the rain and wind provided an added element of adversity. Out of the blocks, GALE, with her customary explosive start, led from the outset. At the 200m mark, several athletes surged to position themselves for the final curve, with PROCTOR finding herself with work to do.
Coming into the home straight, PROCTOR began overtaking the field to move into a close second place behind GALE, setting up a tantalizing final 50m. Across the finish line, GALE delivered a very strong performance to hold off PROCTOR, who seemingly ran out of runway. Both GALE and PROCTOR displayed true grit in the conditions, opening a significant gap on the remaining field. The bronze medal went to Jasneet NIJJAR.
The performances of GALE and PROCTOR single out the duo as leading contenders for selection to this year’s Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026. In the final preparation phase, GALE is scheduled to travel to Colombia with the Senior Pan American Canadian Team, while PROCTOR will travel with the Canadian U23 NexGen Team to Europe.
